Astro-Herbalism
Uniting the Energies of the Cosmos

"Let your Medicine be somthing of
the Nature of the Sign ascending."
- Nicholas Culpeper
Herbs and plant medicines have been used by human beings for tens of thousands of years for healing, nourishment, ritual, ceremony and magick. Throughout history and across cultures, humanity has maintained a deep and interdependent relationship with the plant kingdom.
Plants are the living healing intelligence of Mother Nature. Plants have nourished us, supported us and accompanied us through countless generations, offering their gifts selflessly to body, mind, spirit and soul.
Turning to nature for support, healing and guidance is one of our most ancient instincts although many of us have forgotten how to listen to that instinctive wisdom. There is something within us that remembers that we are not separate from Nature, but part of a living, interconnected web of life.
Returning to a deeper and more conscious relationship with the natural world can therefore become part of our own journey towards greater balance and wholeness. Working with plants as healing and supportive allies is not a new idea; it is a remembering. It is a return to something our ancestors knew intimately.
And so too is our relationship with the stars.
Since ancient times, humanity has looked to the heavens for guidance, meaning and understanding. The movements of the Sun, Moon, planets and stars have been observed, charted and recorded for thousands of years, helping our ancestors understand the rhythms of the seasons, cycles of nature and the unfolding patterns of life.
The ancient astrologer-astronomers developed an intimate relationship with these celestial cycles, recognising that the patterns reflected in the heavens were intimately connected with the world here on Earth.
In the not-so-distant past, astrology, herbal lore and physical medicine were not viewed as separate disciplines. They were woven together as complementary ways of understanding the human within the greater web of Nature and the cosmos.
Astrology offered a map of the heavens. Herbal medicine offered the wisdom of the Earth.
Astro-herbalism brings these two ancient streams of wisdom back into conversation.
Astro-Herbalism
Astro-herbalism is the ancient practice that recognises the relationship between planets and plants, the above and the below.
Rather than looking at a person's symptoms, challenges or issues as isolated and from a purely physical perspective, astro-herbalism provides a wider holistic lens to help understand the deeper patterns and influences that are contributing to imbalances and physical symptoms that are expressing in and through the physical body.
Planets and Plants - as Above so Below
Nicholas Culpeper (1616–1654) is one of the most well-known herbalists who had a sound understanding of the correlations and relationships between planets and plants. A botanist, herbalist, physician and astrologer Culpeper understood that what was in the heavens was reflected by what was on Earth. The planets in the heavens being the celestial bodies (the Above) whose energies and qualities were assigned to plants (the Below) that were then used to treat and address physical maladies, illnesses and imbalances.
For example, Dandelion (Taraxicum officianlis) is a herb associated with
the planet Jupiter with its bright yellow flowers, and expansive and
dispersing actions that benefit the digestive system. Dandelion root and leaves
have been traditionally used to help stimulate bile and support liver function,
aid in detoxification and clear heat from the body.
Mugwort (Artemesia vulgaris), is a herb of the Moon that has a very long history in folk and magickal herbalism. Mugwort has and continues to be used for supporting female reproductive health and its bitter taste has a stimulating action on the digestive system and its secretions. It is the primary herb burnt in the Chinese Medicine practice of moxibustion.

Experience That Bridges Astrology and Herbal Medicine
I bring together over 16 years of experience as a qualified Medical Herbalist and Naturopath (Dip. Herb Med, Dip. Nat, Wellpark College of Natural Therapies, 2007–2010) with more than 25 years as a Professional Consulting Astrologer who has read hundreds of charts.
This unique holistic combination allows me to look beyond individual symptoms and consider the whole person - body, constitution, lifestyle and astrological influences - when developing a personalised approach to your wellbeing.
My practice is grounded in many years of working with people of all ages and with a wide range of health and wellbeing concerns. I draw on both clinical herbal knowledge and the symbolic and energetic language of astrology and vibrational plant medicine to identify where additional support may be helpful.
How does an Astro-Herbalism consultation work?
Your birth chart describes a unique celestial pattern. Astro-herbalism explores how that pattern can be understood through the ancient relationship between the planets, the elements and the plant kingdom.
Using a person's astrological natal (birth) chart and current planetary transits as a guide, and through conversation with you about any issues or symptoms you are experiencing, I can see which elemental forces and planetary influences may be contributing to the physical symptoms and imbalances that you are experiencing.
Some of the tools I use in the consultation process include looking to specific planetary placements in houses, balance of elements and modalities, astrological aspects, planetary dignities and current transits. This is done in conjunction with my knowledge and understanding of body systems and symptomatic pictures.
Please note: I do not diagnose or claim to treat or cure specific conditions, ailments, diseases or illnesses of a physical or psychological nature. My approach is holistic and considers the whole person and whole picture - always looking for the deeper underlying cause. Herbal and nutritional formulas are recommended on this basis.
Your Personalised Herbal Prescription
No two people are the same, and I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. One of the reasons I love to combine personal natal chart analysis with herbal medicine is because it honours the individual.
Your individual constitution, current needs and astrological profile are considered when selecting herbs and other supportive recommendations. Depending on your circumstances, your personalised plan may include herbal tinctures, teas, liquid extracts, flower essences, high-quality nutritional supplements, dietary recommendations and lifestyle guidance.
I take a less-is-more approach which means I won't be overwhelming you with a long list of supplements and complex protocols to try and get your head around. We will focus on what is most relevant and practical for you and take into account your needs, preferences and budget.
The result is a focused, personalised plan that is designed specifically for you, rather than a generic collection of recommendations for herbs and supplements.
